Mechanical Design Engineer Required – 10 kg Horizontal Meat/Chicken Rotating Drum Project Description I am developing a horizontal rotating drum machine for marinating/tumbling chicken and meat and require an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to perform the complete mechanical engineering and design. The drum will contain approximately 10 kg of chicken/meat and rotate at 6–10 RPM. I am looking for an engineer who can calculate the actual mechanical loads and design the complete drive and mechanical system, rather than only creating a CAD model. Basic Requirements * Product load: 10 kg chicken/meat * Drum orientation: **Horizontal * Drum rotation: 6–10 RPM * Application: Food-processing / meat marination * Drum material: SS304 food-grade stainless steel * Continuous rotating operation * Motor-driven system * Compact and practical design preferred * Design should be suitable for actual fabrication and prototype manufacturing Engineering Work Required 1. Load & Torque Calculation Calculate: * Product load * Drum self-weight * Internal paddle/baffle load * Rotational inertia * Frictional resistance * Starting torque * Running torque * Peak/dynamic torque * Possible unbalanced loading * Motor acceleration torque * Required design torque * Appropriate safety factor The engineer must provide the calculation methodology and assumptions. 2. Motor & Gearbox Selection Determine: * Required motor power * Required output torque * Required gearbox ratio * Output RPM * Starting torque * Service factor * Suitable motor type * Suitable gearbox type * Motor/gearbox mounting arrangement The final motor and gearbox should be selected based on engineering calculations rather than estimation. 3. Drum Design Design: * Drum diameter * Drum length * Drum wall thickness * End plates * Internal paddles/baffles * Paddle geometry * Paddle mounting * Shaft-to-drum connection * Drainage and cleaning considerations * Food-contact construction The design should minimize dead zones and be practical to manufacture and clean. 4. Shaft Design Calculate and design: * Shaft diameter * Torsional stress * Bending stress * Combined bending + torsional stress * Shaft deflection * Key/keyless connection * Shaft-to-drum connection * Safety factor 5. Bearing System Select and calculate: * Bearing type * Bearing size * Radial load * Axial load * Bearing life * Bearing mounting * Sealing arrangement 6. Mechanical Frame Design the complete supporting structure including: * Drum supports * Bearing supports * Motor/gearbox mounting * Base frame * Structural members * Vibration considerations * Service access SS304 should preferably be used for food-contact and exposed machine components where appropriate. 7. Drive System Evaluate the most appropriate arrangement: * Direct drive * Geared motor * Chain drive * Belt drive * Coupling The engineer should recommend the **most compact, reliable and economical solution**. 8. Engineering Validation Where appropriate, perform: * Shaft stress analysis * Structural analysis * FEA * Deflection analysis * Factor-of-safety calculation * Motor/gearbox torque verification Particular attention should be given to **startup and transient loads**, not only steady-state rotation. Required Deliverables I expect a complete engineering package containing: 1. Mechanical calculations 2. Torque calculation 3. Motor power calculation 4. Gearbox selection 5. Shaft calculation 6. Bearing selection 7. Drum design 8. Paddle design 9. Complete 3D CAD assembly 10. Individual component CAD files 11. Manufacturing drawings 12. Assembly drawing 13. Exploded view 14. Bill of Materials (BOM) 15. Material specifications 16. Critical dimensions and tolerances 17. FEA results where required 18. STEP/STP files 19. Native SolidWorks files or equivalent 20. PDF manufacturing drawings Engineer Requirements Please apply only if you have experience with: * Mechanical machine design * Rotating machinery * Shafts and bearings * Gearboxes/gearmotors * Torque calculations * Industrial machinery * SolidWorks/Inventor/Fusion 360 or equivalent * Manufacturing drawings * FEA/structural analysis **Experience with food-processing machinery, tumblers, rotating drums, mixers, marinators or similar equipment is highly preferred.** Important I am not looking for a CAD modeller who will simply draw the machine. The selected engineer must be capable of taking responsibility for the **mechanical engineering calculations and design decisions, particularly: 10 kg load → torque → shaft → bearings → gearbox → motor → drum → frame. Please explain your engineering approach before starting the CAD work. Proposal Requirements When submitting your proposal, please provide: 1. Your mechanical engineering qualification 2. Years of machine-design experience 3. Examples of similar rotating machinery you have designed 4. Your experience with shafts, bearings and gearboxes 5. Software you use 6. Whether you can perform FEA 7. Examples of manufacturing drawings 8. Estimated project cost 9. Estimated completion time Please include 2–3 examples of comparable mechanical machines you have actually designed, preferably involving rotating drums, shafts, gearboxes or food-processing equipment.
